IS COUPLES THERAPY COVERED BY INSURANCE?
Couples therapy for relationship, self-esteem/self-improvement, communication and intimacy issues is typically not viewed the same as other types of therapy under the purview of insurance. For insurance to cover treatment, a diagnosis aka medical necessity is required. Relationship issues (Z codes) usually are not covered by health insurance as most of these services are not deemed “medically necessary." In order for coverage to apply, a mental health diagnosis is necessary. This would include a ICD/DSM-5-TR diagnosis. Be wary when an insurance company says that they cover couples therapy. Most likely it means that they cover a CPT code for a partner/spouse to be present in an individual's therapy or treatment.

Under the CA law, you have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.
